Laptop computers have been a lifeline for thousands of students learning virtually across the state, but for Baltimore City high school students, it’s time to turn them in. WBAL-TV 11 News shows how those devices are tied to graduation.School officials tell 11 News they need to have those laptop computers in hand by May 12, that’s the last day of school for seniors. Students are being encouraged and warned at the same time of the need to turn in their laptops if they want to cross the stage.”There are fines. You don’t get your cap or gown and they’ll be reported as lost or stolen,” Thomas Jones, the chief information technology officer for Baltimore City schools.” Already, the stern reminder has reached members of Baltimore City’s class of 2022.”They’re in your possession and the same way something can happen to the computer is the same way something can happen to your graduation,” Jayln Bell, a senior at Western High School, said.The district said it’ll need to account for at least 3,000 computers and well ahead of graduation.”I want to get out to students that we have worked hard to give this to you therefore you can learn, you can do things better. We want you to help us give it to your brother, your sister, your neighbor that type of thing,” Jones saidLooking ahead, school officials said they’ll need to have most if not all laptop computers returned before the summer break.
