While the modern internet of things era is probably no more than a decade or so old, connecting things to the Internet isn’t a new idea. As early as 1982, there was a Coke machine connected to the Internet — or at least, what passed for the Internet back in 1982. That connected Coke machine pre-dates both the first Internet webcam and the now infamous Internet-connected toaster by at least a decade.
