Italy’s biggest bank uses Optane DIMMs and in-memory software to speed apps


Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest bank, is using Optane hardware with MemVerge and Hazelcast system software to enlarge the effective memory pool for its servers and make applications run faster.

Intesa is an international business, with a net annual income of €4.2 billion ($4.5 billion) in 2021, over 5,000 branches, and 40 million customers in approximately 40 countries worldwide. It had a market capitalization over €37 billion (c$40 billion) as of November 2020.

Internet at the speed of light


The internet is such a slowpoke.

In principle, it should operate at nearly the speed of light, which is more than 670 million miles per hour. Instead, internet data moves 37 to 100 times slower than that. The technical term for this speed gap is “network latency,” the split-second delay in an internet connection as a signal travels from a computer to a server and back again.
